Are you in for an easy DIY? When we moved into this home I had my eye on this fireplace for a solid year before I did anything with it. I loved the fireplace, however I wasn’t crazy about how dark & heavy/masculine feeling it was. It definitely played into a more rustic vibe and commanded the attention in the room. I knew I wanted to brighten & lighten it up….so that ‘s exactly what I set out to do.
I did a little research as to what my options would be and watched a Shanty2Chic video on a technique called “German Schmear” and I was SOLD. I had the mortar in my Home Depot online cart that day….but full transparency I was still a little nervous as this fireplace really is the focal point of the room, and this DIY was a first for me & was a biggie.
I gathered all my supplies and set out to start in the most inconspicuous area I could (which was the left corner). 📍TIP: Anytime you do any DIY, I always suggest starting this way, as there is always a bit of a learning curve with everything your first time.
Check out all my tips/techniques and an exact walk-through of how I accomplished this. I have to say, we LOOOOOOOOVE the way it turned out. I stare at it all the time and admire how beautiful she is. Best part, the entire project cost was less than $200. Let’s get to it!
