Taking care of your skin, in my opinion, is one of the very best things you can do for yourself. It is often one of the first places a person starts on their journey of self love and self care, even if they don’t know it at the time.
Our skin can drastically impact our self esteem and how we present ourselves to the world. This is particularly true if you have suffered from skin issues from a young age, like I did. I grew up with terrible acne in my early teens that continued through to my late twenties. Once I learned how to properly care for my skin, I started to feel much more confident in my skin and eventually grew to love being in my own skin, bare, without having to cover anything up with heavy makeup.
Everyone deserves the blessing to feel comfortable & confident in their own skin. I’ve written this post to help direct you or your loved ones with guidance to finding the right Esthetician, or Skin Therapist that can take great care of you.
I wish that I would have taken the route of seeing an Esthetician before I saw a Dermatologist. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes there is a time and place for medicine. In my professional opinion, you are ALWAYS better off learning how to care for your skin both externally & internally (holistically) before going down the path of topical prescriptions & antibiotics. I was on oral antibiotics for acne for SEVERAL years, and I believe that is why I have issues with trying to find a happy place with my microbiome (but that is another post for another day! 🙈)

If you Answered:
Mostly A’s:
I recommend a Holistic Esthetician. These Skin Therapists will usually spend a great amount of time uncovering the why’s behind your skin concerns, such as diet, lifestyle & skincare regime. They tend to be “high touch” and therapeutic in nature, delivering a soothing and relaxing experience along with treating your skin with gentle, yet effective products. They offer home care products that are of organic nature, whole and pure.
Mostly B’s
I recommend a Medical Esthetician. These Skin Therapists have extensive training with several modalities including lasers, microneedling, microdermabrasion, varied depth chemical peels and products only carried in physician offices that offer higher medical grade % of active ingredients. Most of their services are primarily focused on being results driven rather than offering a soothing spa experience.
Mostly C’s
I recommend an Esthetician that focuses on offering both Medical and Soothing Spa-like services. While it may take you a bit longer to find this type of service provider, it will be well worth the wait. This person can help address your more advanced concerns through several different modalities. He or she will also be able to offer you wonderful monthly maintenance facials that will soothe your soul, lift your spirits and deliver radiant, glowing skin.
I worked for several years initially as a Medical Esthetician. I ran lasers that addressed concerns of acne scars, hair removal and dark spots. I also incorporated microneedling, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, dermaplaning and body contouring treatments. As I grew my knowledge in the esthetic field, I developed a passion for offering more therapeutic and soothing experiences as I started to realize humans are deeply lacking methods of self love and self care practices in their life. I wanted to be able to offer them beautiful results of glowing skin and bring warmth to their hearts and souls. Relaxing the nervous system and relieving stress alone, is worth the price of admission for a facial 🙌. There is nothing like feeling pampered & feeling great in your body & skin.
How to Locate an Esthetician
Between Google, Instagram & Facebook…… I would read reviews, look at photos of their work or services if possible, and try to get a feel for who they are. Most Estheticians will offer complimentary consultations where you could visit about what your concerns are, and he or she can share with you the services they offer and how they may fit your needs. You want to get an overall sense that they are committed to understanding what you are looking to maintain or improve. It is a great sign if he or she asks several questions about your lifestyle, diet, current skincare routine and both short and long term goals for your skin. It is a major plus if they can show you some of their clients before/after pictures or read testimonials of actual clients.
I wish you the best, friend! Finding a good Esthetician feels like gaining a new best friend. One that wants to care for you and your skin, and help you to feel better about yourself 😉
